Research & Policy

Focus Areas

Four focal areas, each chosen because it represents a significant policy gap where independent, evidence-based research can drive measurable improvement in student outcomes.

Focus Area 1

Admissions and Access Policy

Nigeria’s university admissions system admits fewer than 700,000 students each year from a pool of nearly two million qualified applicants. The gap between demand and institutional capacity is one of the most consequential and least-researched policy failures in Nigerian higher education.

iRead To Live’s Admissions and Access Policy research examines UTME score distributions and equity implications, cut-off mark policies and their differential impact across gender and geography, institutional capacity constraints, and alternative pathways to higher education.

Research addressed to JAMB and the Federal Ministry of Education.

Focus Area 2

Student Affairs and Campus Welfare

For students who gain admission, the campus environment often undermines the learning it is supposed to support. Nigeria’s student accommodation crisis, inadequate mental health services, and absent welfare infrastructure create conditions that measurably harm academic performance.

iRead To Live produces the annual Student Welfare Index for Nigerian Universities, a composite measure of campus welfare conditions across accommodation, mental health services, campus safety, and student support infrastructure.

Research addressed to the NUC and university administrations.

Focus Area 3

Financial Aid and Education Financing

Cost is one of the most significant barriers to higher education access in Nigeria. The Nigerian Education Loan Fund represents the most significant recent government response, but its reach and equity record require independent scrutiny.

iRead To Live’s Financial Aid and Education Financing research tracks NELFUND disbursements, assesses scholarship availability and distribution, surveys student financial stress, and develops recommendations for improving the accessibility and equity of Nigeria’s financial aid architecture.

Research addressed to NELFUND and the Federal Scholarship Board.

Focus Area 4

Career Development and Graduate Outcomes

Nigeria’s universities are producing graduates without adequate systems to connect them to the labor market. Career development infrastructure in most public universities is nascent, and no institution currently tracks graduate outcomes at the national level.

iRead To Live’s Career Development and Graduate Outcomes research includes the Nigeria Graduate Outcomes Survey, benchmarking of Career Services Centre effectiveness, and a Career Services Standards Framework developed for adoption by the NUC.

Research addressed to the NUC, TETFund, and the Federal Ministry of Labour.
